Superfoods have recently become very popular. Many food companies have been making a tremendous profit by adding this 9 letter word on many food labels. But what in the world does a superfood really mean and what makes them so super?
Despite not having an actual medical or legal definition, the idea behind a superfood is one that contains extraordinary health benefits because of its dense nutrient profile. These superfoods are said to have really high levels of antioxidants, nutrients and minerals. Superfoods aren’t just confined to the produce section, but they extend to nuts, seeds and even some grains. In addition, many of us already consume common superfoods on a regular basis.
Here are some examples of “superfoods”:
– Gogi Berries
– Water Cress
– Brazil Nuts
Don’t get caught up in all the hype and save your pocket at the same time, remember keep it simple. Be mindful of additives that companies use in producing some of their superfoods. If you are already getting daily servings of fruits, veggies and nuts then keep doing that!
